Traffic Engineering Study
Locust Street and Lowry Road
Intersection Sight Distance
2022-01-03
Intersection Sight Distance
mm 2 Way Stop Approach sight distance:
250'for gravel (major road)based on 50 mph
325'for hard surfaced (major road)
The distance for the leg of the sight triangle on the minor
should be 26'to 30'. For simplicity, it is recommended
T s that 33' is used.
Clem Wit liungie
=--
Location of Eye
Roadway Characteristics
Locust Street(major roadway) is a hard surfaced (asphaltic concrete) roadway with a posted speed limit of 55
mph. Lowry is the minor approach with traffic required to stop approaching Locust Street.
The horizontal and vertical alignments of both roadways are straight and relatively flat with no impact on
sight distance. There are 3 large trees in the southeast quadrant of the intersection that impact sight distance
for a westbound vehicle on Lowry Road approaching Locust Street. The trees are located approximately 100',
125' and 150'south of Lowry Road. The west edge of the trees are approximately 18', 15', and 15'east of the
east edge of traveled lanes for Northbound Locust Street traffic. The trees are right at the recommended 14'
to 18' of recommended sight distance for traffic approaching a roadway. The trees are located within Hall
County Right-Of-Way.
While an eastbound vehicle on Lowry at Locust Street can position themselves to see around the trees, the
large diameter of the trees impact sight distance.
Sight Distance Impacts
While of lesser concern, the trees impact sight distance for vehicular traffic on the driveway. The vehicular
traffic using the driveway is passenger cars, pickups or SUV's with no used by farm implements or large
trucks.Since the trees are close to the driveway and right at the recommended 14'to 18' of recommended
sight distance for traffic approaching a roadway, they have a bigger impact on sight distance for driveway
traffic then traffic on Lowry Road.
tttttttttttttttttttt
C fl
While a vehicle on Lowry Road can position themselves to see around the trees, ' Fp
they are inside the sight triangle using 325'along the east edge of the travelled _,`,yG * ,"6 1 ,
way(white edge line0 and using 33' along the centerline of Lowry Road. It is S I EN
recommended to remove the trees for the safety of the east approach on Lowry ri° P. RIEHLE A
Road to Locust Street. Removing the trees will also improve sight distance for % E-6350
vehicles using the driveway south of the trees.
