JERRY PICCOLO - DISCUSSION & UPDATE REGARDING JUVENILE CASES - Public
Defender Gerry Piccolo noted that on the criminal side there were 844 Felonies at 150 cases
per attorney there would need to be 5.6 attorneys and if you use the national average, 955
misdemeanors and at 150 cases per attorney you would need 5.62 attorneys. He stated that
they are at an acceptable level.
On the Juvenile side they opened 411 cases and the national average is 200 cases per
attorney. Right now Dorothy has twice the national average. Gerry stated that they opened 38
cases and if you use 40 x 12 that would be twice the national standards. The number on the
juvenile side justifies another attorney but that is up to the county board. The Judges appreciate
having Dorothy for these cases and Dorothy likes doing the work, but the question is do we hire
the extra person or he has to withdraw from the cases. He has withdrawn from 49 cases in the
last 3 months.
Mr. Klein stated that there was a backlog of juvenile cases and he filed 112 cases and 60 of
them have gone through. The 2019 numbers may be a little inflated because some of the cases
were from 2018
5
