environment. There were employees that had strong opinion to sign the petition. This is a small
issue and it is important to listen.
Hurst made a motion and Quandt seconded to accept the petition to save the sycamore tree
and place it on file. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING PROCESS APPOINTING
BOARD MEMBERS TO OUTSIDE ENTITIES - Lancaster stated that this addresses board
members on CVB, Stuhr Museum and Regional Planning. She is asking how the county wants
to address this do they want to do the interviews. In the past an ad was put in the newspaper
asking for volunteers and there was very little response. Gene McCloud was at a meeting and
expressed concern on the process. The county board was not aware who had applied for the
position. How does the board want the process to look like keep it the same or change the
process?
Ray O'Connor requested to address this issue he noted the following concerns.
• Concern on the fact there may be a conflict of interest when motel owners are making
decision for other motel owners
• They need someone who will market Grand Island
• Noted that Mc McCloud solicited an event on his own that did come to Grand Island
• The board needs members who will go out and sell Grand Island instead of sitting in a
meeting
• He would like to see the County Board see a full slate of people who applied
Hartman noted that the people on the board need to be more active and make a commitment
and questioned if this is the executive directors responsibility.
Lancaster noted that the County Board has a liaison to the CVB Board. She noted that the
hotels benefit directly. There are a limited number of hoteliers who can be on the board. It is a
good pint to have all of the applications brought to the County Board but it should be the same
process for all of the outside boards. If the County gives tax dollars to an agency the board
wants a liaison on the board.
Peterson noted it is hard to do the interview if you are not familiar with the board. It isn't a bad
idea to be aware of the people who have applied. They could provide a list of who applied and
explain why they did not recommend them for the position.
Lancaster noted that some would not apply because it was a public issue.
6
