Quandt questioned if they could use the bottom of the Federal Building.
Loran stated it is hard to get the furniture in and out. They would have to come through the front
door and carry it over the tile floors. All of the carpet and the excess tile would have to be
moved by hand. Loran stated that 2 of his employees are working 10 hour days on the security
installation at the Courthouse. They will be staring at the park soon and that leaves him with 2
to keep up with the day to day maintenance and all of the snow removal.
Hartman suggested hiring someone to do the moving instead of doing it themselves. He also
stated that if the county keeps the old Health Department Building it will need some work.
Loran proved information on the Health Department building and some estimated on the
demolition and a proposed parking lot.
Richardson noted the estimated for the demolition and the parking lot. She stated it is a lot of
money to get a parking lot.
Bredthauer noted that the airport tore down the 8000 square foot old terminal for a lot less.
Loran stated he took the total square footage of the building times the dollar amount he was told
it would cost.
Quandt expressed concern on the numbers he also asked they would also have to tear out
some of the old concrete.
Richardson ask why we are tearing down a building to create a parking lot to help City Hall and
downtown Grand Island. The building is being used for storage you do not tear down a good
building for a parking lot.
Lancaster questioned if the building is worth saving. If the county uses the inheritance fund for
major building expense there are prefab building that could be used for storage. Discussion was
held regarding the asbestos and Loran stated that if you do not occupy a building you do not
have to remove the asbestos. There is storage space in the annex that could be used.
Mr. Humphrey stated that he needs more time to clean out the health department building and
dispose of the surplus furniture.
Bredthauer reviewed the budget and the dollars that would be available in the building and land
fund.
Hartman stated that at the last 2 meting they keep spending money and he stated they need to
put a freeze on all expenditures.
Peterson stated they need to handle things in order and Loran needs some extra time to clean
out the building. He stated he needs 90 day to get it done with all of the bad weather we have
had.
Peterson made a motion and Quandt seconded to allow 90 days from March 5th to clean out the
building. Bredthauer, Hartman, Hurst, Lancaster, Peterson, Quandt and Richardson all voted
yes and none voted no. Motion carried.
Hartman stated that if you keep the building you need to spend some money to keep it up.
9
