The power point
presentation showed the proposed renovation of GIPS Memorial Stadium it will be a $15.3
million dollar rebuild of the west side of the stadium and a $1.7 renovation of the east side. In
1947 the veterans came forward with a program to build memorial stadium. The School district
sold Ryder Park to the City and the veterans solicited donors for the project. She noted that
there is no handicapped access to the field they have to sit on the track so this will be
addressed. She showed the proposed changes and amenities in the new stadium. They will
add locker rooms for the home teams, meeting rooms' press box and boxes for the coaches. It
was also noted that the buildings are now on the 30 yard line and will be moved to the 50 yard
line so they will be centered. Right now there are 2800 seats including the metal bleacher with
the renovations there will be 5100 permanent seats and more seating once the other side is
renovated.
Lancaster noted that more people attend the state soccer than football and she also enjoys
soccer. This will be the Jack Martin field his son Lanny is donating the dollars. Traci stated
they will start in January but there will be programming that they will have to work around. It
should be completed in the fall of 2020. She distributed information to the board members.
6. UPDATE FROM HISTORICAL SOCIETY REGARDING GRAND ISLAND EAST CEMETERY
— Michelle Setlik was present and they distributed information to the board members. They
have been working to find the unmarked graves and it is a bigger project than they thought.
They originally thought there were 75 graves but they have marked 700 graves. If you travel on
Capital Avenue you will see wood crosses and these crosses mark the rows of graves. Sue
Clement was also present and the Historical Society has taken this on as an official project.
She provided pictures and show the stone marked "Baby" but it was broken in several pieces
they have also found a metal marker that is dated 1928. They have also found out that there
may be people from Merrick County buried there. She thanked the newspaper for the publicity
this helps find people who may have some information. She thanked Mr. Humphrey and Mr.
Riehle for cleaning up the grounds and mowing. She also noted that they have used the
dousing rods to locate the graves and it is interesting how they work. Mr. Humphrey also tried
using them. They had 1400 brick donated and they still need more.
3
