Sorensen said they did look at bringing the service in-house, but it was only about
$10,000 difference. When the county went out for bid the first time, we did not receive
any bids and the second time we only received 1 bid. When you look at the MAAA cost
they are half of what it costs the county. We would need to look at a larger scale to
reduce the costs. MAAA ride cost is $55.00 to $60,00 range. We need to have some
options for rural transit but with Brown it would be about $300.00 a trip. Scott said he
would recommend holding the public hearing for the service and consider cancelling the
service.
Peterson stated there is no action just set the public hearing for June 30,2026. He ask
if the people can be notified of the hearing and Bob stated that they will have the drivers
hand out flyers to them.
Sorensen wanted to make sure the news media knows that Crane has not changed this
is the rural transit service.
12. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING A NEW BOARD POLICY—
Richardson distributed information to the board members. This policy addresses any
items placed on tables or the horseshoe in the boardroom that is not reasonably
necessary and interferes with the orderly conduct of any meetings. This can be
enforced by the chair. She noted that she has received comments that the display is
unprofessional.
Richrdson made a motion and Sorensen seconded to approve the policy addressing
items that are placed on the horseshoe that are not reasonably necessary and
interferes with the orderly conduct of any meetings.
Quandt questioned, who decides what is reasonable he gets compliments on them.
Richardson stated that toilets are not necessary or reasonable to county board
business.
Quandt said it shows waste of taxpayer money he get compliments.
Richardson said it is an embarrassment to the community. The board sees otherwise
Lancaster expressed concern about this and what the action would affect. She noted
that the shelf on the horseshoe was installed to hide items from the public. If there was
a prior policy, then there would not be an issue. The shelf makes it look more
professional.
Marty stated this is a close call and he has done research. The county commissioners
have a right to free speech just like any member of the public, but the county has the
ability to control it own environment to show a professional setting. He believes this is
neutral it does not target anything and if anything, that we deem is not professional, the
board chair can ask that it be removed. This is not targeting any one thing or person,
5
