Sorensen made a motion and Hurst seconded to accept the state bid to purchase 3
2022 John Deere 770GP motor graders with the 5 year warranty from Murphy Tractor &
Equipment.
Bredthauer stated that Scott took the lead on this and he did the research.
Peterson ask how the bids worked and ask if the trade units were calculated in the cost
and Scott said the numbers were based on the trade in values.
Sorensen stated he would have recommended the Komatsu and sated they are good
machines but expressed concern on the trade in value of the units down the road. The
noted that the iron prices are going up and there have been 2 price increases so they
need to get this done.
Quandt noted there was $11,100 dollars difference for the 3 machines.and Scott said
they came in under budget and they need to address the future.
Peterson questioned the Komatsu trade in price in the future and Scott noted there was
no 7 year warranty and felt that was a red flag. Another company also offered a parts
credit. Peterson ask how many counties use the Komatsu. Scott stated that Cedar and
Madison Counties use the Komatsu machines and they are 6 years old now he does not
doubt the performance but is concerned on the trade in value per machine. He also
noted that the John Deere units are larger machines and we are not in the business of
building roads just maintaining them. He has based his recommendation on the future
decisions.
Lancaster ask if there was a problem with the larger machines and Scott said there was
some concern if they would fit in the machine sheds but they will. She also questioned
the 5 or 7 year warranties. Scott said he does not like to extend the warranties more
than 5 years because he is not sure if it is worth the additional cost. He did a lot of
research.
Bredthauer stated she talked to Rich the maintenance foremen and they usually do not
see any costs until after 5 years usually the repairs come in after 9 years old.
Quandt noted they need to look at the low bid.
Lancaster noted sometime the low bid does not always fit the situation and stated she
appreciated the research.
Richardson noted the bids are always referred to the departments to look at the
comparisons and she appreciates Scott's research.
Peteson noted that the Komatsu machines are new and it is hard to prove their worth if
they do not have them on the road. You do not know what will happen with them unless
you have the opportunity to try them.
Sorensen noted that the county may want to look at leasing motor graders and that
would be good opportunity to see how they work. With all of the new electronics there
4
