UPDATE REGARDING HALL COUNTY HERO FLIGHTS - Don Smith, Willy Skala and Don <br /> Shuda per present. Willy Skala stated that he had attended Buffalo County meeting and they <br /> were discussing the Hero Flights and he was encouraged to bring this to Hall County. He <br /> contacted Don Smith with the Grand Island Independent and from that day forward it has moved <br /> forward to honor people. This will be the 10th Hero Flight that will be leaving this week. <br /> Mr. Don Smith stated that this has been a 10 year journey that has been a rewarding <br /> experience. He also noted the welcoming home celebrations at the airport and the support from <br /> the community. <br /> Mr. Shuda stated that the family escorts get as much from the flights as the veterans do and <br /> when they come back they open up about their military experiences with their families. It <br /> changes people when they have served. <br /> Lancaster noted the scrap iron drives during WWII and Quandt also did the scrap iron drive for <br /> the Hero Flights. The community support is amazing and they appreciates the donated food <br /> items from JBS and McCain. <br /> Quandt stated this is a community effort and he appreciates the leadership of Don Smith, Don <br /> Shuda and Willy Skala. Mr. Shuda stated they have raised over $1 million dollars for the flights. <br /> Lancaster noted that every flight has a book listed all of the veterans that are going on the flights <br /> and Shuda stated that every flight has a t shirt that is made for the veterans. He noted that he <br /> has every shirt on display at his office. <br /> Quandt thanked the city for the large flag and Mayor Jensen and Mayor Steele present the key <br /> to the city.
