Wffr
Lancaster questioned the amount of square footage in the public defender's office and how
much there is in the Federal Building. Ms. Ruzicka stated that they have currently spent
$172,284.00 at the public defender's office and it is not completed yet. She reminded the board
how they budget for these projects. The dollars do not have to be spent that year they need to
look at the cost per square foot and need a reasonable rough estimate on the cost.
Mr. Zitterkopf stated he does not want to raise taxes or spend a lot of money and it is not a
competition between him and the public defender. We received this beautiful old building for
free and it could end up poor quality. It deserves the best that we can do. There will also be the
issue of furnishings.
Lanfear agreed that they do not want to over spend but he does not want to see it sit.
Bredthauer stated it needs to be done right the first time.
Lanfear made a motion and Richardson seconded to approve adding the additional restrooms
and break room. There are certain standards to preserve the historic integrity of the building.
Bredthauer expressed concern on future space and the cost per square foot. She questioned
how they came up with the proposed total.
Schuppan expressed concern on the latest plan may need to wait need to look at it some more.
Quandt stated they need to use some common sense regarding the cost.
Lanfear withdrew his motion and Richardson withdrew her second.
Discussion was held on all of the additional bills for the Courthouse that were approved today
and concern was expressed that these may have not needed to be done. The county attorney
needs the space and the restrooms it is a good location but they need more information. Arnold
suggested making a unisex bathroom.
12:52 a.m. Mr. Schuppan left the meeting.
b) COURTHOUSE CLEANING, PAINTING & FLOOR WAX GRINDING & POSSIBLE ACTION
The Courthouse was to be cleaned after the construction was completed. The ceiling and
Bredthauer noted that the ceiling and the walls are better but she showed pictures of the dust on
the rails and the dirt on the steps. She talked to Judge Young and there was a cloud of dust
when he left and the building and the copy area was black with dust.
Mr. Humphrey stated that they were not supposed to start the cleaning until the building was
empty and the areas were not taped off. They used 2 negative pressure machines to pull the air
outside. Discussion was held on the janitorial services and there are also concerns. The bid
was reviewed and if the work was in the bid but it was no done.
Discussion was held on the color to paint rotunda and it was agreed to use the original color.
They have spacers behind the chairs to prevent damage.
Mr. Humphrey explained that the floors have a buildup of old was and they need to be cleaned
up discussion was held to grind off the old wax. Mr. Humphrey will find someone to look at the
floor and grind it off and bring it back to the original color then seal it. He will get a quote on the
cost.
11
