DISCUSS &APPROVE INDIGENT FUNERAL RATES — Lancaster stated that the Ad Hoc
committee of Matt Myers, Kevin Wood, Derek Apfel, Dan Narjano, Trish Curran, Jane
Richardson, Gary Quandt and herself met. She stated that it is the county's responsibility to
care for indigent funerals but the funeral homes do not have to provide the services at a loss.
They reviewed the Hall County guide lines with the Nebraska Department of Social Services
regarding the most efficient way to address the costs. It was determined that cremation would
be the best way. The service would be determined between the family and the funeral home.
The transportation of the body to crematory and back would be included. The total cost would
be $1,750.00. The established rate would be effective July 1, 2015. The intent would be to
revisit the funeral expenses in 5 years.
Quandt this has been discussed since 2001 and nothing has been done they funeral homes
should not have to lose money. This is long overdue.
Lanfear questioned what happens to the remains if they are not claimed.
Mr. Narjano stated that if no one claims the ashes the funeral home can dispose of them as long
as all avenues have been addressed.
Mr. Zitterkopf questioned if the cost if just for the cremation or if it includes the cost of a service
and this cost would include the cost of the service also.
Lancaster stated they also discussed the resolution regarding the coroner's legal action. And it
will be cremation only. If the family's religious beliefs do not allow for this they would have to
provide their own.
Lancaster made a motion and Richardson seconded to approve indigent burial to be cremation
only at a total cost of$1,750.00 effective July 1, 2015 and to review the cost in 5 years.
