<br />fg J-olf7 <br /> <br />DISCUSSION ON GANGS: Gary Quandt requested that this be <br />placed on the agenda for the County Boards information. He <br />distributed a letter from a father concerning a daughter <br />that is involved in a gang to the board members. <br /> <br />Sheriff Terrill Perkins stated that the law enforcement <br />agencies need to work together and come up with solutions. <br />He stated that two programs, GREAT (Gang Resistance <br />Education and Training) and the DARE (Drug Abuse and <br />Resistance Education) are actively working. He spoke on the <br />following topics, gangs are a community problem not just law <br />enforcement, the restructuring of his department, community <br />and problem oriented policing, educational conferences that <br />are available and working together as a whole community. <br /> <br />Vikki Duel, principal at Walnut Middle School stated that <br />behavior changes in students prompted her to seek <br />information from people at the Law enforcement Training <br />Center and she started attending workshops and doing <br />research on gang activity. She stated that the Grand Island <br />school system has a zero tolerance on any type of weapons <br />and a structured dress code. Parents are notified on dress, <br />tatoos or any behavior that reflects gang associations. The <br />Grand Island schools are safe. She stated that networking <br />with schools and law enforcement is a valuable tool and <br />information must be shared. <br /> <br />Dale Iman stated that gangs are a nation-wide problem/and a <br />Youth Task Force has been developed and they have a list of <br />problems that they are addressing. The community youth <br />council has obtained a grant and have established three <br />goals, drug and alcohol abuse, gang resistance and racism to <br />address. The family preservation program has also been <br />established. The promotion of healthy activities for youth, <br />proactive efforts, maintaining programs and gaining police <br />intelligence are activities that are currently addressing <br />these problems. <br /> <br />Hartman stated that the County Board would help any agency <br />that they could and work together to support the current <br />programs.
