The Social Security Administration pays our Department $400 for inmate information
received within 30 days after the individual's date of confinement/conviction. For
information received after 30 days, but within 90 days after the individual's date of
confinement/conviction, $200 is paid to the reporting facility. To date, we have
submitted approximately $6400.00 to the County's General Fund for incentives received
from this program.
State Welfare Agencies must check for periods of incarceration for an individual when
he /she applies for food stamps. State Welfare Agencies can request this information from
Social Security, saving time by not having to contact other state agencies or local
correctional and mental health institutions for the same information.
Taxpayers also benefit from this reporting process. While confined, inmates receive
food, clothing and shelter at taxpayer expense. If SSI payments were not stopped during
periods of incarceration, inmates would be allowed to receive "a windfall of government
benefits ". Also, individuals signing up for Social Security benefits are responsible for
reporting changes back to the SSA. Not notifying SSA of incarceration periods makes
the individual responsible for paying back any money they should not have gotten.
Sincerely,
Holly K. Plejdrup
Administrative Assistant
Portions of the above information were obtained from the Social Security Administration website
www.ssa- custhelp.ssa.gov.
