It is important to note that the tern "damage' refers to threshold damage as defined by the
(UJSBM) and (BSI) standards. Critical failure of the object of study depends on many additional
factors.
2.0 SITE MOBILIZATION
2.1 PILE DRIVING
The installation of piles is a common practice on many construction projects. Piles are used to
support many of the structures we use every day. They are used as barriers that confine ground
pressures and prevent unwanted movement. Driving pile as with many other construction
activities and even daily activities of the human population and the earth itself cause vibration.
Driving pile however at times is a necessary process.
201800874
Excessive vibration levels from construction activities, although temporary may reach levels that
can damage utilities. The Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) is appropriate for evaluating impulsive
vibration associated with vibration sources such as pile driving and the resulting stresses that
potentially are damaging to underground utilities.
3.0 DRIVING PILE
From BS 5228-2:2009 Annex B section 4.4 we are given the following criteria.
a) Maximum PPV for intermittent or transient vibrations 30mm/s
b) Maximum PPV for continuous vibrations 15mm/s
4
