The high water table is causing problems with the
runways and in order to correct this they would need to raise the level of the runway by
two feet. The have looked at ten different options to solve the water problem and the
best option would be to pipe the water to the Platte River. They have considered three
different routes one that would go down Shady Bend Road with a total of six and one-
half miles to the river or using Gunbarrel Road which would be six miles or go down
Gunbarrel Road to Bismark Road which would be six miles. The last route would put the
water in Merrick County and they would have to cross Highway 30 and the Union Pacific
tracks. The parties involved would like to develop a steering committee with
representatives from the city of Grand Island, Central City, Merrick County, Hall County
the Hall County Airport and the Wood River Warm Slough Association. The Hall County
Airport and the Wood River Warm Slough Association has each contributed $1,000.00 to
research the possibility of obtaining grant money for this project. Jeffries wanted to
clarify that the members on the steering committee would not be obligated to help fund
the project. Hall County is the first entity to be contacted to assign some one to the
steering committee.

Discussion was held on the Capital Heights ditch that is used to drain outflow ditch. The
Capital Heights ditch is on county land but the city owns the right of way. Landis stated
that when the Army was working on the water clean up at CAAP they looked at piping
the water to the Platte River but the cost would have been one million dollars a mile to
do this. The water is now pumped into Silver Creek. Landis also asked if the water from
the airport would be sold. Mr. Stoval stated that this is only a rumor and the airport
would only sell the water if there were a market.

Mr. Robinson owns property in the area and he stated if the water were piped to the
Platte River it would help, but if it were put into the Capital Heights ditch the area would
continue to be flooded. The City would is also looking at de-watering wells in the
Seedling Mile area and Shady Bend so they may be able to utilize the drainage pipe if
the airport is able to proceed with this project. Jeffries stated that according to the tri-
state compact involving Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming if water is pumped into the
Platte River and the water flow is maintained a county would obtain credits allowing
them to pump more from the irrigation wells. If the water flow is to low Fish and Wildlife
can shut off the irrigation wells.
