2 9:00 A.M. JUDGE COREY, COUNTY ATTORNEY MARTY KLEIN AND JUVENILE
SERVICES DIRECTOR RANDY SEE — DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION
REGARDING JDAI COORDINATOR POSITION — Judge Corey, County Attorney Marty
Klein and Juvenile Services Director Randy See were present to address the JDAI
coordinator position and grant application. In December Judge Corey and Judge Wetzel
came to the board to address the juvenile initiative and there is a JDAI aid grant that is
available. They would like to request those funds for the coordinator position.
Peterson ask where the office would be and if it would be under the County Attorney.
Marty noted that there is a line item in the budget where the county has paid over
$100,000.00 in detention costs. Probation determines the placement of the juveniles.
At that time he had reservations if the coordinator would save money but with the
possible grant funding this would be an opportunity to focus attention on the juveniles.
Then they could see if it would save money over the course of time. He fees this
opportunity is available and would like to apply for the grant and ask for approval for the
position with the grant funding. He would have space in his office.
Judge Corey they need a coordinator to look at options and at what could be done for
the placement of the juveniles
Peterson noted the board needs to approve the grant application and then approve the
position.
Randy stated that the grant would start July1, 2022 so they need to apply for the grant
and make sure it will be available.
Quandt made a motion and Sorensen seconded to move forward with the grant
application and authorize the chair to sign.
Lancaster ask if they are asking to apply for the grant and for the position. The position
would be provided they get the funding.
Marty clarified that if they approve the application and if they are successful then fill the
position and if not approved he would come back to the board.
Randy they have to have board's approval and there has to be support for the position.
He noted that it could be classified on Range 17.
Lancaster noted the position is vital for the juveniles and it could possibly save some
money because what the coordinator would do is not being addressed now.
Judge Corey noted there may be more services in the community they need to see what
may be available.
Lancaster ask if there was any possibility that the Boys Town facility in Grand Island
could be opened. The judges have discussed this with CEDARS. Boys Town was a
valuable resource.
4
