9.10:00 A.M. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING THE WEST GRAND
ISLAND/ALDA INTERCHANGE EXIT— Quandt stated he received a call from
businessman that travels this area and also works at Husker Harvest Days. He
expressed concern about the traffic Hwy 281. He questioned why there could not be a
west exit off of the Alda Interchange. With the possibility of stimulus dollars for
infrastructure this could be looked at. Quandt showed a map of the area and the road
would have to be updated because the roads at CAAP are not maintained. Gary stated
that this would feed western Grand Island. He would like to put a plan in place and if
the funds would become available consider making this exit. He also noted that there
are a lot of wrecks there now. Quandt noted it took 20 years to get the South Locust
interchange finished.
Quandt made a motion and Bredthauer seconded to work with Regional Planning, City
of Grand Island ad Hall County to look at a future exit from the Alda Interchange.
Mr. Sorensen stated this is a solid idea but would need some more research for the
funding. The current administration is looking at infrastructure. He noted that there are
3 1/2 miles of gravel and he travels this several times a week. It would add 4 miles of
paved roads. There is also a critical bridge in this area that needs to be addressed and
they may want to consider making it wider to handle a 2 lane road.
Mary Berlie with the Economic Development Corporation she thanked the board for
being invited regarding this issue. She stated that EDC is always looking at
opportunities to be more connected and having additional access points. This makes
sense for our business community.
Mr. Peterson said he assumed the State would also need to be involved because his is
a state highway. The exit is already there but the road would have to be improved.
Bredthauer, Hurst, Lancaster, Quandt, Peterson, Richardson and Sorensen all voted
yes and none voted no. Motion carried.
12. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION APPROVING RESOLUTION SUPPORTING
THE SECOND AMENDMENT Mr. Sorensen stated at the last meeting he would like to
bring this forward. We should not take this for granted it is our duty as commissioners
to uphold the Nebraska constitution and the US constitution.
Gary Niedfelt was present and Dennis Beran was also present to address this.
Lancaster noted that Dennis Beran had to leave and she wanted to acknowledge him.
Mr. Niedfelt said he received a letter from Jeff Stephens, president of the Sheriffs
Association asking for a donation and he ask him to promote the idea of the resolution
regarding the second amendment sanctuary. Now 1/3 of Nebraska Counties have
approved this. Mr. Niedfelt stated that if the government thinks they are coming for our
guns this is a deal breaker.
