7 '
,,_ Faith United Methodist ChurchJul, ' 4 '0'3
-, Loving into the kingdom all God's children Ht' > '"' "+'9
$ through intentional discipleship, worship, and serv'p:: ) .' °
s
..,..: 4190 W Capital Avenue 308-382-3219,faith®um4gi.org
Grand Island, NE 68803 www.gifaith.org
June 14, 2013
Dear Janet Pelland:
On behalf of the Trustees, as the current and continuing pastor of Faith United Methodist Church
(UMC), I would like to request reconsideration concerning the recent notice from the Hall County
Assessor's office of Faith UMC's exemption status. I thank you for guiding me in this process through
our phone conversation on May 31, 2013.
First, I want to be absolutely sure that one change we talked about has been corrected:the
parsonage (parcel number 400090023 at 1319 N Cedar St.) is still being used as a parsonage for the
pastor appointed to Faith UMC and the United Methodists for Grand Island Parish. Please confirm
that the parsonage should not have been included in your letter and remains exempt from taxation.
Second, please invite the County Board to reconsider the removal of state exemption status for the
church and parking lots(parcel numbers 400089580 and 500123355). Section 77.202.d of the
Nebraska Revenue and Taxation Statutes describes the exemption granted to religious
organizations so long as the property is
1. owned "for the exclusive benefit of any such...religious organization"; and is
2. "used exclusively for educational, religious, charitable...purposes."
Additionally, the statute grants exemption to organizations that are"operated exclusively for the
purpose of the mental, social, or physical benefit of the public or an indefinite number of persons."
The property of Faith UMC, while not used for worship fulfills these statutes. It is neither owned, nor
used for any purposes other than that which serves our organizational mission. The United
Methodist Men of Faith UMC is the Charter Organization for Boy Scout Troop 114, which still meets
weekly in the building at 724 W 12th St. Our continued relationship with Troop 114 is one way Faith
UMC seeks to live out its religious mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation
of the world and loving into the kingdom all God's children. Presently, Troop 114's leadership has no
definite plans of moving or changing its relationship to Faith UMC.
Thank you for your service to the community and for presenting this request for reconsideration. If
you need more information, please contact me. Likewise, if my presence of the presence of a
representative from the Trustees of Faith UMC is helpful at the upcoming County Board meeting,
please contact me.
Sincerely,
Pastor: Matthew E. Fowl"r, Elder 308-646-0603 fowler.me®gmail.com
