Veterans Service Office
Donald L. Shuda HALL/HOWARD/NANCE/SHERMAN COUNTIES Margaret M. Goerl
Veterans Service Officer 131 S. LOCUST ST. Administrative Assistant
dons @hallcountyne.gov GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA 68801 margyg @hallcountyne.gov
September 12, 2018
Jane Richardson, Chairperson
Hall County Board of Supervisors
I feel I must address the threats and intimidation made to me by Supervisor Scott Arnold. On Sept 11, 2018 Scott
came into the Hall County Veteran Service Office to visit with me. Since Doone had installed a sign indicating
where the other office is located at I had placed a sign indicating where the Veterans area is at. Scott was very
upset with our sign and stated it must be removed. I find it puzzling that one sign is appropriate to indicate where
an office is located at and our sign is inappropriate. I agreed to remove our sign until this issue is resolved, will the
other office sign also be removed until this issue is resolved?Scott stated that he was going to have a Resolution
presented to the County Board to make sure we didn't have a sign indicating our office area The conversation
escalated to the point of Scott stating that he is planning on having the Veterans Service Office moved to another
location as our office is "like no other in the county'. Is this something that the entire Board has been discussing?
To my knowledge no one from the Hall County Veterans Service Committee has been included nor has this office
been included in any such discussion."If I remember correctly he also stated he was sick and tired of how I
operated. Scott did say I was racist, which I took offense to and strongly voiced my opposition to We have many
veterans and family members seek assistance from our office that has many different nationalities and
backgrounds. He also threatened me with his evaluation of me. Is this the proper method of a Supervisor? He
also accused me of being passive aggressive which hopefully is only his opinion as I find it difficult to believe that I
am passive. He indicated that he had many complaints about our sign only to find that not to be true. He stated
that the chairs in the area next to the other office area are against fire code. Did anyone communicate with the
Fire Marshall? I question this as this is no longer a "common hallway" it is an area that is for the other office. The
door north is locked for no public access.
On another matter Scott stated that he didn't support our office having the water drinking fountain, which I found
alarming as our county veterans should be as deserving of this as any other public building. Scott brought up the
issue of the POW/MIA flag being flown on county property and accused me of escalating the issue. As everyone
should remember it was not I that caused the county board becoming involved? Doone had stated that his
committee had made a decision not to fly the POW/MIA flag on the administration building, which was found to
be inaccurate.
"LEST WE FORGET"
Phone: 308-385-5065 • Toll Free: 877-558-0799 • Fax: 308-385-5066
