lg
NEBRASKA
Good Life. Great Journey.
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
July 13, 2018
HALL COUNTY CLERK
121 S PINE ST
GRAND ISLAND NE 68801
Dear Hall County Clerk:
On April 17, 2018, Governor Pete Ricketts signed Legislative Bill 1009 (LB1009) into law which
increases speed limits on many of Nebraska's highways, expressways, and freeways. The changes you will
see as a result of this new law is that maximum speed limits currently posted on state highways will increase
outside of town from 55/60 to 65 miles per hour and on state expressways and freeways from 65 to 70 miles
per hour. This will modernize and bring consistency to the speed limits on our statewide transportation
network, which will help meet driver expectations and provide for a safe and efficient flow of traffic.
Understanding your community is located near Link 40C, Spur 40D, Nebraska Highway 2, Nebraska
Highway 11, US Highway 30, US Highway 34, US Highway 281, which is/are one of the aforementioned
state roadways that will see the speed limit adjusted by this change, this letter is to provide notification and
information on how these changes will be implemented.
Furthermore, I would note that as part of this process that NDOT will continue a thorough
examination of our state's highways, expressways, and freeways to make sure that the posted speed limit
remains appropriate based on a road's design and typical usage. In addition, in instances where there are
roads with topographical limitations for example curves or hills, those
segments of the aforementioned p
segments of roads will be studied to determine the appropriate posting.
LB1009 will go into full effect on July 19, 2018, which at that point NDOT crews will begin
systemically changing speed limit signs on these classifications of state roadways. This process may take
some time to complete, therefore you may not see an immediate change to the posted sign on the July 19
implementation date. However, it is important to note that the legal speed limit will remain whatever is
posted and will remain as such until you see posted skins changed to the new speed limit.
If you should have questions or would like additional information, I would encourage you to contact
your local NDOT District Engineer(see enclosed).
Sincerely,
Kyle Schneweis, P.E.
Director
KS:VK:z
Ky^.e 5chneWeis.G.E.,Director
Department of Transportation
150_Ilh:asi' OFFICE 40% 1 -5L% FAX 1 i "1 =
dot.nebraska.gov
