9:05 a.m. Held a Board of Equalization meeting. <br /> 9:10 Returned to the regular meeting. <br /> PUBLIC PARTICIPATION — Chairman Lancaster called for pubiic participation and no one <br /> responded. <br /> B�ARD ASSISTANT'S REPORT- Stacey Ruzicka reminded the board members of the 8:00 <br /> a.m. special meeting. <br /> COMMITTEE OR BOARD MEMBER'S REPORT—Chairman Lancaster called for board <br /> member's reports and no one responded. <br /> 7. DISCUSS AND APPROVE RESOLUTION REGARDING RETAINING VETERAN'S HOME IN <br /> GRAND ISLAND - Mr. Quandt state that the County needs to continue to show our support to <br /> retain the Veterans Home in Grand Island. <br /> Ms. Lancaster stated that the Veterans Home has been in Grand Island, for 126 years the <br /> veterans regard Grand Island, as their home. This is a quality of life issue that rises above any <br /> point system. We are in the process of moving forward with the installation of batting cages at <br /> the VFW there is an area for the hike and bike trail, iYs close to shopping and we believe in what <br /> is best for our community, best for our veterans and for their quality of life. <br /> Veteran's Service Officer pon Shuda read Resolution #13-056 <br /> McFarland made a motion and Ziola seconded to approve resolution #13-056 regarding the <br /> retention of the Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home. <br /> Arnold addressed the fact that the veterans will have to travel from Kearney to Grand Island for <br /> doctor appointments and that is a 45 minute drive. This location will be an inconvenience for <br /> the veterans. <br /> Mr. Quandt stated that there is one group that has been left out in this whole process and that is <br /> the veterans. There was a petition started and they were told to stop and the employees cannot <br /> discuss this issue. We have to fight for our veterans and this is the first step. <br /> Ms. Lancaster read the conclusion of a report calied `Transfer Trauma." <br /> McFarland noted that if the veterans have to travel to Omaha for medical appointments it will <br /> take even longer. He also noted that the average age of the veterans at the home is 83 years <br /> old. He also stated that in 2008 when the veteran's home was moved to Bellevue they lost 85% <br /> of their employees. <br /> The vote on the motion to approve Resolution#13-056 was taken. Arnold, Lancaster, <br /> McFarland Purdy, Quandt, Schuppan and Ziola all voted yes and none voted no. Motion <br /> carried. <br /> 2 <br />
