CLAUSEN <br />HALL COUNTY <br />Hall county is located in a rich agricultural <br />area of Central Nebraska and has 16 townships. <br />There are about 1,400 farms. These farmers <br />are well diversified with crops and livestock. <br />About 50% of the land is under irrigation. <br />Corn, wheat, oats, alfalfa, and soybeans are <br />the leading crops with cattle and hogs the main <br />livestock. The county ranks first in the state in <br />the number of irrigation wells. The office rec- <br />ords show about 1,900 wells. This makes the <br />agricultural income quite stable. <br />55,980 head of cattle were recorded in 1953. <br />Beef feeding is the most important enterprise in <br />the county. Some of the largest and most pros- <br />perous livestock feeders in the state are located <br />around Grand Island. <br />Dairying is very specialized with about 6,500 <br />dairy cattle registered. It is a very important <br />enterprise to those that are engaged in the <br />dairy business. The retail value of milk sold in <br />Grand Island last year grossed about 2' /2 mil- <br />lion dollars. <br />The county extension office brings the results <br />of research to the farmer, his wife, and his chil- <br />dren through demonstrations, meetings, tours, <br />home visits, newspaper articles, and radio <br />broadcasts. Each week a broadcast is made <br />from the "extension office over K.R.G.I. and <br />K.M.M.J., our local radio stations. <br />AGRICULTURAL <br />INFORMATION <br />By CLYDE B. CLAUSEN <br />Hall County Agricultural Agent <br />Grand Island, Nebraska <br />540 women enrolled in .h.ome project activities. <br />The 4 -H program is carried out through 43 4 -H <br />clubs, while the women's work is carried on with <br />38 home extension groups. The office also co- <br />operates with the farm organizations, livestock <br />breed associations, crop improvement associa- <br />tion, dairy herd improvement association, Hall <br />county noxious weed district, and the soil con- <br />servation district. <br />A very active rural youth club is also super - <br />visect by the extension service of the county. <br />The extension office works closely with the Col- <br />lege of Agriculture and the University of Ne- <br />braska in presenting factual information to the <br />farm people. The office assists in scheduling <br />university personnel for meetings of various <br />civic organizations. <br />The county agent's office is located in the <br />basement of the courthouse, Grand Island, Ne- <br />braska.
